This conclusion was shared between the panelists: It is not a matter of &#8220;when&#8221;; China is already here and we&#8217;d better learn how to work with them because they can live without us.<\/span><span class=\"white-space-pre\"> <\/span><span><br \/><\/span><span><br \/><\/span><span>China has<\/span><span><br \/><\/span><span>&#8211; changed enormously in the last 20 years, with massive economic growth.<\/span><span><br \/><\/span><span>&#8211; a project called &#8220;New Quality Productive Forces&#8221; where they will move from low cost production to innovation &amp; high-value manufacturing (i.e. coming right for our industry).<\/span><span><br \/><\/span><span>&#8211; a ongoing trauma from the &#8220;century of humiliation&#8221; that makes it focus on (military) power.<\/span><span class=\"white-space-pre\"> <\/span><span><br \/><\/span><span>&#8211; a key partnership with Africa &amp; the global south where China does not lecture them on e.g. human rights.<\/span><span><br \/><\/span><span>&#8211; no need for Europe (but still wants to do business)<\/span><span><br \/><\/span><span><br \/><\/span><span>We, Europe, need to decide how to play in this world: surrender, resist or adapt. &#8220;Radical reciprocity&#8221; seems to be the way forward, e.g. if they protect their market, we should do too.<\/span><span class=\"white-space-pre\"> <\/span><span><br \/><\/span><span><br \/><\/span><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dorien-emmers-a0184a81\/\" id=\"ember617\" class=\"ember-view\" tabindex=\"0\">Dorien Emmers<\/a><\/span><span class=\"white-space-pre\"> <\/span><span>voiced it perfectly: &#8220;By better understanding China we can conquer our fear and see the opportunities&#8221;.
